**미국의 현행 대학입시제도 하에서는 한 학생이 여러 대학들에 무제한 복수지원을 할 수 있으므로 한 학생이 여러 대학들에 합격하는 경우가 흔합니다. 그러나 아무리 많은 대학들에 합격했더라도 어쨌든 매년 5월 1일까지 단 하나의 대학 만을 선택해서 등록(Enroll/Commit)해야 합니다.

일드율(Yield Rate)은 합격증을 받은 학생들 중에 그 대학에 최종적으로 등록해서 입학한 학생들의 비율로서, 이해하기 쉽게 표현하자면 2018-19년 입시에서 스탠포드와 하버드의 경우 합격증을 받은 학생 수가 100명이라고 가정했을때 최종적으로 82명 정도(81.9%, 81.7%)의 학생들이 등록/입학했다는 의미입니다. 마찬가지로 밴더빌트와 USC에는 절반에 못 미치는 49명(48.6%)과 41명(40.8%) 정도의 학생들이 등록/입학했다는 얘기지요.

즉, 일드율은 대학에 대한 학생들의 선호도/충성도를 나타내는 매우 중요한 지표이며, 일드율이 높을수록 그 대학에 대한 학생들의 선호도/충성도가 높다는 것을 의미합니다.

대학들은 일드율을 감안해서 합격증을 내보내게 되며, 일드율이 예상보다 너무 낮게 나온 대학은 웨잇리스티드 시킨 학생들로 신입생 정원을 충당하게 됩니다. 반대로 일드율이 예상보다 너무 높게 나온 대학들은 초과한 신입생 수 만큼 기숙사를 비롯한 여러 학교 시설들이 부족하게 될 수 있습니다. 그럴 경우 기숙사 방의 수용인원을 1인실→2인실, 2인실→3인실 같은 식으로 늘리게 되어 학생들이 불편하게 됩니다.

일드율 예측은 대학 어드미션 오피스의 중요한 임무들 중의 하나입니다.

일드율이 낮은 대학들은, 합격시켜줘도 다른 상위대학에 붙을 경우엔 그 상위대학으로 가버릴 것 같은 상위 스펙을 가진 지원자들을 걸러내어 불합격(또는 웨잇리스티드) 시킬 확률이 높습니다.

이것을 '일드 프로텍션(Yield Protection)'이라고 하며, 보스톤에 있는 명문 터프츠(Tufts) 대학이, 터프츠를 보험삼아 안정권(Safety)으로 지원하는 아이비급 지원자들을 합격시켜 주었다가 대거 아이비 리그 대학들에 빼앗겨 왔으므로 일드율이 내려가는 것을 막기 위해 이런 아이비급 지원자들을 적극적으로 불합격 시키거나 웨잇리스티드 하는 것으로 유명해서 '터프츠 신드롬(Tufts Syndrome)'이라는 이름이 붙었습니다. 서부에서는 USC가 적극적으로 일드 프로텍션을 하는 학교로 알려져 있습니다.

대학입시에서 수험생들의 아이비 선호도는 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 크며, 수험생들의 아이비 대학으로의 쏠림현상 또한 해마다 심화되고 있는게 현실입니다.

그런데 사실, 정도의 차이는 있지만 모든 대학들이 매년 새로 입학하는 신입생 정원을 균일하게 유지하기 위해 일드 프로텍션을 하지 않을 수가 없으며, 얼리전형(Early Decision/Early Action)도 일드 프로텍션 방법들 중의 하나입니다. 모든 사람들이 가고 싶어하는, 세계의 대학들 중에서 가장 강력한 브랜드 파워를 가진 하버드 대학 조차 100명의 합격자들 중에 20명 가까이는 하버드가 아닌 다른 대학을 선택하기 때문입니다.

그러므로 수험생은 자신이 지원하는 대학에서 공부하고 싶다는 열망을 커먼앱 에세이 등을 통해 대학 측에 강하게 보여주어야 합니다.
